NOVEMBER 2025
TechBox Autumn Sharing


Techbox welcomed local and international guests to share projects that integrated technology with live performance and outdoor arts.
These included Stream Walkers a hybrid street performance merging live action, video projection, and interactive streaming from Signdance Collective (UK), Znagovni Ples (Croatia) and Ana Monro Theatre Company (Slovenia), and Making Nature a collaborative exploration into the relationship between music and visual art by Laurie O’Dowd and Ewan Johnston. .

OCTOBER 2025
TechBox in Valongo

Surge exhibited two TechBox projects at Círculo MIT Valongo in Portugal.
The international theatre festival explored the boundary between real and imaginary, where theatre and video merged, expanding aesthetic horizons. We presented Portal to an international audience for the first time and re-vamped Chatty Brian so that he could converse fluently in Portuguese.
Companies from Spain, USA, France, Belgium and Portugal also exhibited work.
JUNE 2025
Surge Festival - Portal

TechBox's Portal returned to Surge Festival, this time hosted at the Social Hub.
A bumper crowd turned up to Portal, eager to be transported to worlds of their own imagination - Octopus, Jelly fish, robots, cats, puppies and pixelated Minecraft inspired universes were created and explored!
Running over two days in the Social Hub in the heart or the Merchant City, Portal invited the public to drop in and explore realtime generative AI, live green screen video and model building and improvisation.
JUNE 2025
Surge Festival - Chatty Brian

Chatty Brian was unleashed on the public at Surge Festival.
Chatty Brian, a rusty, glitchy and bad-tempered robot, was re-salvaged and rebooted to help TechBox entertain the crowds queuing to enter the immersive experience Portal.
This curmudgeonly but crowd-pleasing character was designed by Jordan MacNeil from the HND model making for TV and film course at City of Glasgow College.

JUNE 2025
TechBox - Summer Sharing
TechBox presented two new in-house projects and hosted Anton Vasiliadis work-in-progress project Surrender(d) .
Chatty Brian was a pushy robotic warm-up act powered by an aurdino, some servos, a tangle of wire and an AI chatbot. DeliverArt was a first glance of an mobile immersive arts project that parodied app based delivery services, and Anton Vasiliadis offered guests the chance to surrender their digital connection and delve inside a disconnected digital environment.


MARCH 2025
TechBox - Spring Sharing
TechBox hosted three sharings focussing on immersive experiences.
These included Over the Rainbow, an immersive VR experience exploring happiness, created by Maya Dance Theatre, AV Ventura and supported by the Singapore Arts Council, and Hover, created by Althea Young and collaborator, Sam Cogdon, which examined her recent work that featured a duet with a drone.
TechBox resident Neill Ritchie introduced WebVR applications that can be used to build immersive environments.


OCTOBER 2024
TechBox - WIP Sharing
TechBox hosted work-in-progress projects looking at different immersive technologies and techniques.
These included a session with Scottish physical theatre artist Liz Strange and Lebanese dance artist Sarah Fadel discussing the development of their project I Might Not Make it. They shared reflections on their process, experimenting with digital technology to explore the themes of the work, as well as how it could help make the making, rehearsing and presentation of the piece more accessible for both audiences and the artists involved.
TechBox residents also invited participants to play improvisational games with our comedic chatbot, delve into the potential of 3D gaussian splats for scanning realistic environments and viewing them in virtual reality, and learn about the capabilities of Web VR applications.


JULY 2024
Portal on Candleriggs
We developed and produced our second in-house project which exhibited at Surge Festival in Glasgow.
Portal on Candleriggs invited passersby to leave the streets of Glasgow behind and step into imagined worlds of their own making!
Using model making, simple props, green screen, live performance and real-time generative AI, we transported portal guest to other worlds in a fun mash-up of improvisational theatre and cutting-edge technology.
The portal was created in collaboration with students from City of Glasgow College NQ Model Making for TV and HND Model Making for the Creative Industries courses.

JUNE 2024
TechBox WIP Sharing
TechBox held an afternoon sharing event in their studios where guests from Scotland's creative industries where invited to share their work in progress projects.
Guests included immersive theatre company Produced Moon and indie games developer Joe Bain from Hairy Heart Games.
The event attracted creative practitioners from many fields, including theatre, physical arts, education, games and animation, who had a chance to participate in the sharings and network afterwards.

FEB 2024
Miniature Spectacular
Techbox's first in house project exhibited at Manipulate Festival in Edinburgh.
This experimental installation merged miniature model-making and hand crafted art with projection-mapping, MIDI controllers and realtime generative AI.
We created a scale model city to represent Edinburgh with a giant inflatable hovering above it. Participants were invited to interpret what this mysterious object was - maybe a a foreboding omen or a symbol of hope - then the were asked to respond by designing it look by using collage, which was then transformed with AI software then projected onto the inflatable.

JAN 2024
Fun Town - Rural Residency
Fun Town is an anarchic video game and an immersive street theatre mash-up.
In January 2024 we undertook some early stage development to explore the concept of merging street arts with video games.
This development involved experienced street artists, theatre-makers, directors, writers, 3D artists, games designers and educators. The results were then presented as an immersive sharing, where participants were given the chance to glimpse the game world then experience the festival.

AUG 2023
Beautiful Bones - Digital Content
To compliment Surge's anarchic musical pandemonium celebrating death TechBox created playful digital content to support the event.
These included the Trom-Bone-o-Phone, a mobile web-based musical app, behind the scene videos of the four horsemen of the apocalypse's trusty steeds and 3D models of the marvellous production design that could be viewed in augmented reality accessed by scanning QR codes that were situated around the performance.




JAN 2024
Mixed Reality Theatre Workshop
To reboot TechBox we host a two day weekend workshop exploring how technology could be integrated with live performance.
TechBox residents introduced participants to different types of tech, these included: photogrammetry (3D scanning), motion capture, generative AI art, live interactive vision-mixing (using Resolume), augmented reality mobile apps and social media lenses. Participants returned with ideas using these technologies to build prototype swith the assistance of TechBox. Concepts included an AI generated fun-house mirror and an interactive murder mystery.
