This November Glasgow will host the historic COP26 summit on the global climate crisis.
SURGE believes that outdoor arts have an important part to play in climate discourse whether this is activism, community outreach or simply encouraging playful and creative thinking. To engage with our local and visiting communities throughout COP26 we will be taking part in a range of outdoor arts activities. Here’s how you can get involved.
Moving Out Symposium
Together with Wraptheworld, SURGE is excited to be hosting a special edition of Moving Out, a symposium on outdoor arts in Scotland and internationally. This in-person & online edition will focus on climate emergency and how artists create change.

SURGE Outdoor Arts Bursaries
This year, SURGE’s annual outdoor art bursaries were awarded to emerging makers with focus on the climate crisis. Our three awardees were supported to create new works which have so far been shown at SURGE Festival and Spraoi in Waterford, Ireland. ‘Hey Idiots, Text Me Your Climate Change Solutions’, ‘Cat Sith’ and ‘It’s a Sign’ will be shown as part of The People’s Summit.
For times and locations please keep an eye on our social media.

SURGE Community Street Theatre at Galoshans Festival
We will be returning to this year’s Galoshans festival with Kayos Theatre Company. As part of Creative Carbon Scotland’s Climate Beacon Programme, this year’s festival has a focus on ecological themes and our performers will take to the streets as elderly turtles, slowly returning our lost plastic belongings from the ocean.

COP26 Outdoor Arts Hub
With space in the city at a premium, SURGE will open our studio spaces to a range of artists and activists using outdoor arts across COP26. We can provide green room and rest space for performers and artists as well as a warm environment to meet other makers.
While our initial call out is closed to bigger groups, if you feel you could benefit from our space during the summit please contact christiana@surge.scot and we will endeavour to help out where we can.
